Australian Parent Visa

Having children who live in another country is a difficult experience because it stops you from being with them, and many parents don’t know what they can do to solve the problem. The good news is that you can apply for an Australian parent visa to reunite with your children.

Doing so gives you the opportunity to get a permanent home in Australia once you complete the process, and wait for a positive outcome. At this point, you could be wondering how parent visas work and what you should expect if you apply for one. This guide reveals the facts and points you in the right direction, so you won’t have trouble reaching your goal.

Parent Visa Overview

Because Australia wants to make it as easy as possible for parents to join their families, it allows them to apply for parent visas. Those who get these visas stay and work in the country for as long as they need. Many of them go on to become permanent residents.

You might feel confused when you learn Australia offers more than one type of parent visa. You can apply for a standard visa or a contributory parent visa. Should you apply for the parent visa, it depends on your budget and long-term needs and knowing the facts will allow you to make your choice with confidence.

Parent Visa Requirements

This section covers the requirements you must meet before applying a parent visa. Knowing the requirements gives you better chance to prepare in a way that improves your odds of success and moves you through the process without unnecessary delays. Your children must first invite you to join them in Australia before you go forward with the application.

If you have more children living in other countries than living in Australia, you can’t get a parent visa. Most of your children must live in the country if you want the government to accept your application, but the good news is that children living in your home country won’t count against you. Although the government often takes up to several decades to approve parent visas, you can get one in as little as two years if you pay the $45,000 fee to become a contributory parent.

Why You Need Legal Help

You might think you can file for a parent visa without getting professional help. Although the government allows parents to apply for visas without legal guidance, doing so could make the difficult process even more challenging. Messing up something in the paperwork you file is easy and can increase your wait time.

You will have to go back and fix the error before you can take the next step in the process, and you can’t afford to waste time. Your immigration attorney will let you know if you qualify and what type of parent visa makes the most sense for your situation. Having a caring and knowledgeable lawyer on your side gives you peace of mind and lets you avoid unneeded complications.
